23 23 we moved onto a dredge that was not working. it was tied up at a dock which the company owned. i built a fence around the dredge so bobby wouldn’t fall off. at that time, i was making about $100 a month. soon after, we were on the road again, but i was glad for it. we went back to louisiana. gloria was born in Weeks Island in 1937. then i got a good job in Marrero, and they kept me busy. some days i had to work at a yard on the river, some days i had to be working a stump dredge down south in lafitte. i liked the job, but i was getting tired of going back and forth, and one day i was driving down barataria boulevard when i saw a sign saying there was a house for sale. it was about halfway between lafitte and marrero. i thought it would be better if i was there. if i was needed in either place, well, my drive was just about the same either way. so i looked up the man who had it for sale, and i bought it, and we moved in. this was in 1938. over the years, i added on. i built a chicken coop and we had a cow. the property was seven acres. a half-acre wide, 14 acres deep. i bought it, and we moved in. this was in 1938.
