10 shreveport, and then to alexandria. in alexandria, i couldn’t catch a ride. i came to a little town where i met a policeman or town marshall or somebody. i asked him about a place to sleep and he let me sleep in the jail that night. the next morning, he let me out of jail and i went down the road to try and find a freight train. i met a negro guy who told me how to catch a train. we got down under a culvert and waited until the train was about a quarter of a mile away and then started to run. we ran alongside, and jumped on. so, i took the redball express all the way from alexandria to new orleans. i was seen by the brakeman two or three times, but he didn’t make me get off. when the train got to a little place below baton rouge, some fellows told me we had to get off before new orleans so we wouldn’t be arrested, but that i shouldn’t get off the train in avondale as i would be caught and made to work on the levees. there was high water at the time. i did get off in avondale though. they had a huge yard, 15 or 20 acres. nobody stopped me. i started walking. i met a negro guy who told me how to catch a train.
