12 12 that i had money enough to sleep, but not to rent a room. i walked quite far and met another policeman who told me to go to the sixth precinct. i didn’t go because i met another guy who told me i should go to canal street, fool around all night and then take the street car the next morning to west end. i walked to canal street and was very impressed. it was the widest street i had ever seen. i got to talking to a news vendor on canal street and he told me i could hang around there all night if i wanted to and if i saw a policeman, to cross the street and walk back after he’d gone. i did that, and caught the street car the next morning for the west end. when i arrived there, i walked down the levee and met thomas coming up. the dredge was in dry dock. i helped thomas on the work boat and that eve- ning we walked out to bucktown to the suction dredge. the next morning i got up and went to work like everybody else. i proved to be a good hand. the name of the dredge was ‘tampa. ’ i walked down the levee and met thomas coming up.
